Scouting During COVID

BCC: All Group Commissioners and Relationship Managers - Posted November 12, 2020

Good Evening Group Commissioners and Relationship Managers,

There have been ongoing updates provided by the Alberta Government in the last few days with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Council Key 3 (CK3) have been monitoring these announcements closely.

Today, the Government of Alberta and our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hinshaw, announced temporary restrictions for all areas under a Watch Status. These new recommendations are in place for the next two weeks and will be re-evaluated on November 27th. Although most of the restrictions have been focused on Edmonton and Calgary, they also apply to all areas currently under Watch Status including Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and Red Deer. This does not include the North West Territories (NWT), as they are under a different health authority, with different local conditions.

At this time, we have made the decision to move to Stage 1 - Virtual Scouting, effective November 13th, for a minimum of two weeks. As Scouts, we are responsible members of our communities and although this is not what we had wanted, we feel it's important to lead by example. By supporting the recommendations of the province over the next two weeks, we hope to be able to return to a higher stage going forward. This is the time we need to stay in our communities and tighten our social circles so that we can flatten the curve. Please share this information with your Scouters and families.

We will continue to monitor the situation and notify you of any changes as soon as possible. If you need any help or support, please reach out to your Group Support Scouter, your Relationship Manager, or the Council Key 3.

In the interim, we invite you to check out our virtual program resources at, as well as the new Scouts for Sustainability Program and Personal Achievement Badge Portal at If you are looking for virtual meeting ideas, there are plenty of amazing ideas and activities.

Youth need Scouts more than ever to retain a sense of community, belonging, and support. We know groups will continue to provide fun, safe adventures—not matter the format.

We want to thank you for your continued efforts to provide Scouting adventures to the youth in our program. You make a difference in the lives of our youth and our Scouters.Thank you for everything that you do!
